Sorry to those who have been waiting on our last post.
Our trip ended in New Orleans where Jake attended the American Library Association Annual Conference and Casey just enjoyed the city. It was the first time either of us had been to New Orleans. Our big takeaways were delicious food, great music, rich history, and incredibly hot and humid.
Alright time to play a little catch up with our posts.
As we left LA Saturday afternoon, we had to start thinking ahead to picking up the camper in Albuquerque. It was becoming clear that either the camper or the Vibe would not be making it back to Wisconsin with us.
We started our day with the complimentary continental breakfast at our motel (read: cereal and a piece of fruit) before heading off on the final long drive of our Route 66 journey. Driving through rural western Arizona, Jake got the first bingo of the trip when he finally saw the Burma-Shave signs on the side of the highway (he had missed at least three in Illinois).
We started off the day with a delicious breakfast at the casino before making a short backtrack of about 10 miles to Meteor Crater, the "first proven, best-preserved meteorite crater on Earth.
As mentioned in our previous post there was an issue with the camper. The trailer the camper was sitting on was bending. As you can imagine this is not good.
Our third day on the road was filled with unexpected twists and turns. We hit a few dirt roads and dead ends along the way, but the drive was beautiful and it was all in the "spirit of Route 66".
It was a stormy first morning, but we didn't let that stop us from driving into Chicago and starting our trip from The Art Institute of Chicago in Grant Park and official start of Route 66. Traffic in Chicago at 6am isn't that bad.
We kicked things off with a surprise visit to see our good friend Robin be given the Unsung Hero Award at her school. We then drove down to the Blackwell Forest Preserve for our first night of camping.
School's (almost) out for the summer and we will be hitting the road! You can follow along with us if you would like. Along the top you will see some of the stops we have planned along the way. We will be adding more stops and photos as we go!
