The second day of biking was a bit rougher than the first, as you might guess. We were definitely feeling the distance we'd already traveled. Fortunately, we did get to start off the day with a delicious breakfast provided by our host, Clare, and the sun was shining brightly. Hard to believe anyone can get tired of the view here. We also learned that the ending of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and parts of Episode 8 were filmed on Skellig Micheal (the largest island on the far right).
At about 10:30, we began our journey back to Killarney with an easy ride down the other side of the moutain. It was nice to reap the benefits from our hard work the day before. The easy ride ended though when we made our way up hill again to visit the Staigue Fort. It was worth the climb though. The Staigue Fort is a round fort build entirly of stone from around the 4th century. There is no mortor or anything holding the rocks together. It was a pretty awesome spot because there are no off-limits areas and you can climb to the top of the fort wall the same way people have done for 2,000 years.
We continued back on the main road to Sneem, where we had the best fish and chips in Ireland! To be fair, that was the 3rd time we'd seen that claim along our bike trip, but it was pretty darn tasty either way.
Next up on the ring was Kenmare, where we took another long break. We were really feeling the miles at this point, but were still in good spirits. We needed the rest, as just past Kenmare was our second mountain pass pass to climb to. The weather also turned rainy and misty as we left town. With a lot off effort we made it to the top of Molls Gap. The view was bit limited with the fog but it was still gorgeous.
We had finallly reached the last leg of our bike trip! It was truly amazing, even in the rain and mist, flying down the moutain side on our bikes through Killarney National Park.
We just had to stop a couple times to take in the beauty.
At about 9:30, we finally arrived at our B&B in Killarney. It was a very welcome site after another long day of biking. For any of you thinking of biking the Ring of Kerry in the future, might we recommend taking 3-4 days instead of 2.
