Beyond the Wall

Submitted by jwineichen on

Today, we drove the final stretch to Killarney and dropped off the car with barely any hiccups. We managed to not hit anything except for a bush on the side of the road (No scratches though! And it really was the bush's fault). We dropped off our luggage and began our next adventure.

The agenda for today: Bike. Eat lunch. Bike again. Eat dinner. Bike more. We rented bikes form O'Sullivan Cycles, who were friendly and awesome, and went on our way. Here's us a little outside Killarney.

The first town we came to was Killorglin, the home of the Puck Festival, where they crown a real live goat King Puck for the year. The festival is in August but here's Casey with the next best thing.

We stopped for lunch at Rossbeigh Strand, a beach on the northern coast of Kerry. You can see the Dingle peninsula across the water.

We had a simple lunch of bread, cheese, and meat (only €10 for both of us!).

After lunch, we continued on our journey and entered the Kerry Dark-Sky Preserve. Everyone in the community makes a concerted effort to reduce or eliminate exterior light at night to make it one of the top inhabited places to star gaze in the Northern Hemisphere.

Much later, we arrived at part of the western coast of County Kerry. Here's Casey on the shore of Ballinskelligs Bay in Waterville.

All that was left to do was climb about 700 ft to Coomakista Pass. We both made it to the top. As you might imagine, it was quite an accomplishment and so we celebrated.

The views from the top are pretty spectacular though.

After that, it was a short ride downhill to our B&B. We celebrated our trip as any good Irish person does, with a pint of Guinness.

Tomorrow, the return.
